Introduction
Very simply put, battery load testers are devices that check if the battery is going to run any longer or not, or if the battery has any life left in it for further use. It doesn’t matter if one owns a car or a truck, a yacht or a jet, as long as these modes of conveyance require batteries for support! For, if these are one’s possessions, possessing a battery load tester is equally important.

What is a battery load tester?
Plunging into the detail, battery load testers are portable, handheld diagnostic devices that are used to test 6 volt and 12 volt lead-acid-type batteries used in automotives. An eight-to-ten-seconds test establishes the condition of the battery that is being tested. The test can be performed on partially or completely charged batteries, and the test results will still convey the exact condition of the battery.

What is it made of?
The battery load tester contains three essential parts: an LCD display with four digit places - used to display the reading of the battery being tested, a switch to apply the test load, and finally a red LED that is used to determine the condition of the alternator.

Types of battery load testers
Battery load testers can vary in size, shape, and magnitude of pulse load. The simplest ones come along with the batteries themselves. They are in the form of strips, stuck along the body of the battery. Next in line are the handheld ones or the multimeters that are used to measure the battery life of automotive batteries. The next set of battery testers are used to measure multiple batteries at the same time.

Load battery testers are also classified according to the types of batteries that are being put under test. There are lead acid battery testers, and lithium battery testers. Lithium batteries are rechargeable and can therefore be used a repeated number of times.

How does a battery load tester work?
Simple battery load testers use a small conducting ink that determines the temperature by responding to the changes in the temperature inside the battery. The higher the temperature of the battery, the higher is the current that is being passed within the battery, and therefore, higher is the charge of the battery. In simple words, the temperature change is directly proportional to the charge or the battery life. Every battery load tester only measures the current that is being passed in the battery, in some way or the other.

The handheld battery testers use typical resistors to measure current. The display could either be digital or a mere pin depending on the make and cost.

Procedure of use and interpretation
If an automotive battery is being tested, the vehicle’s ignition and all features that require battery support (i.e., headlights, music system, air conditioner, etc.) are turned on for a minute and then turned off. The battery is then tested by placing the electrodes of the battery load tester across the battery terminals. A reading in the range of 13.5 volt to 15.5 volt for a 12V battery indicates good battery health/life.
